It is our pleasure to bring you an interview with Shawn Kravetz, president of Esplanade Capital in Boston. The interview was conducted in December by Joshua Berg and his father Ethan, CIO of G4 Partnership. We are grateful to Josh and Ethan for making Shawn’s insights available exclusively to our members.

The following transcript has been edited for space and clarity.

MOI Global: Please tell us about your background.

Shawn Kravetz: Prior to founding Esplanade about 17 years ago I had been a business guy. I grew up in business around the dinner table when my dad ran companies principally in the footwear industry. I grew up expecting to be a business guy, helping to run companies or perhaps running companies. I followed that path out of college and business school as a strategic adviser, a strategy consultant, and also an executive at a public company that is now defunct, unfortunately. Those were the things I did prior to founding Esplanade in 1999.

MOI: What drew you to value investing?
